powerful Nigerians” are behind illegal mining in the country

Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, asserted before the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals that influential Nigerians are supporting illicit mining, linking them to the sponsorship of banditry. He emphasized the need for illegal miners to register with cooperatives to legitimize their businesses, allowing the government to collect royalties and taxes efficiently.

Alake expressed dissatisfaction with the allocated N24 billion budget, claiming it is inadequate and urged the committee's support for increased funding, particularly emphasizing the necessity of N250 billion for mineral exploration. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of mining corporations and a mines police force to enhance security in the sector, involving host communities to prevent conflicts.
