A Court In Ghana has sentenced a Chinese national to prison for illegal gold mining in the West African nation

In Accra, on December 4th, a Ghanaian court sentenced a Chinese national, Aisha Huang, to four and a half years in prison and imposed a fine of 48,000 Ghanaian cedis ($4,000) for engaging in illegal gold mining. The case, initiated in 2017, highlighted Chinese involvement in such activities. Aisha Huang, initially pleading not guilty, changed her plea to guilty during the trial. Despite the plea for a fine and deportation by her lawyer, Hope Agboado, the court opted for imprisonment. The decision on whether to appeal is still under consideration. Ghana, known for gold, oil, and cocoa production, grapples with illegal mining, with Chinese nationals allegedly playing a significant role, causing environmental damage and impacting cocoa production.

The 'Galamsey queen,' as Huang was known in the Ghanaian press, is part of a series of similar cases involving Chinese nationals in Ghana during 2021 and 2022. The cocoa regulator reported substantial cocoa losses in the 2022/23 season due to smuggling and illegal mining. ($1 = 11.9500 Ghanaian cedi)
