ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant, admits using OpenAI's technology for AI model development, acknowledging this after OpenAI suspended ByteDance's account over GPT data usage concerns.

ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant, acknowledges utilizing OpenAI's technology to a limited extent for developing its AI models. This admission follows OpenAI suspending ByteDance's account due to concerns about GPT data usage. ByteDance, licensed by Microsoft for GPT APIs, uses them sparingly in evaluation and testing. Notably, OpenAI's services are inaccessible in China. ByteDance claims its self-developed AI powers Doubao, a ChatGPT-like tool exclusive to China.

The Verge reported ByteDance secretly using OpenAI's tech, prompting OpenAI to suspend ByteDance's account pending investigation and potential policy violations. ByteDance ordered staff to cease GPT-generated text use, aiming to avoid OpenAI's terms of service breaches. The incident underscores the competition among Chinese tech giants in AI development, contributing to the broader US-China tech rivalry.
