Google Maps Misstep Advice: A Case In Nigeria

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, advised a driver, Oyiga Michael, to face legal consequences for violating traffic rules while relying on Google Maps. Michael, who was using the app to find his way home, reported being arrested at Ijesha and claimed the police demanded a bribe. Hundeyin emphasized that ignorance and using Google Maps are not excuses, urging compliance with the law.

He clarified that road signs are not the responsibility of the police and encouraged lawful resolution rather than paying bribes. Michael acknowledged the mistake and expressed hope for leniency.
