During the ongoing debate surrounding OpenAI's control, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has expressed interest in recruiting the company's AI researchers. He offered to match their compensation to join Salesforce's Einstein AI research team, encouraging them to submit their CVs directly to him. Benioff even responded directly to OpenAI employees on Twitter, assuring one that they wouldn't need to use Microsoft Teams at Salesforce, suggesting Slack for meetings. Former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman anticipated such attempts to attract his team, emphasizing unity and commitment among former employees.  Around 700 of OpenAI's 770 employees threatened to join Microsoft unless the current board, which ousted Altman, resigns. Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, announced Altman and Greg Brockman joining the company to lead a new advanced AI research team.

AI Safety Rift

Image
The disagreement leading to Sam Altman's removal from his CEO position at OpenAI revolves around differing views on the safety of rapidly developing and publicly deploying artificial intelligence (AI). Altman and some, like him, see the need for real-world testing to refine AI, while others advocate fully developing and testing it in a controlled environment first.  The rift reflects broader concerns within the tech community about the safety of rapidly advancing technologies like AI and self-driving cars. Altman's dismissal, in part, stems from concerns that OpenAI was releasing AI products too quickly, potentially compromising safety. The fate of OpenAI is seen as crucial to AI development, and the interim CEO, Emmett Shear, has expressed a desire to slow down AI development. The reasons behind Altman's removal remain somewhat unclear, but the challenges facing OpenAI in navigating the balance between innovation and safety are evident.

African Road Infrastructure Ranking

The World Bank describes roads as the vital lifelines of the economy, connecting producers to markets, facilitating commutes to work and school, and ensuring access to healthcare. In the African context, countries are investing significantly in roads, recognizing their role in fostering economic growth, job opportunities, and interconnected communities. Beyond physical connectivity, well-maintained roads symbolize a nation's dedication to progress, providing smoother journeys for both citizens and visitors. A novel measure of road quality, the Mean Speed (MS) score, developed by the International Monetary Fund using Google Maps data, reveals that certain African countries excel in road infrastructure.
